The battle for world literacy is too often a story of unsung heroes. That's one reason the NALD newsletter will bring to you on a regular basis a list of those individuals, programs and organizations honoured with international, national and provincial recognition for outstanding work in the global literacy initiative.

International

UNESCO International Literacy Awards
Each year UNESCO offers International Literacy Prizes ($15,000 U.S.) for outstanding work in promoting literacy, notably among women and girls. Presentation of the awards took place on International Literacy Day, September 8, 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.

King Sejong Literacy Prizes
The Republic of Korea established the King Sejong award in 1989.

Canada Post Corporation Flight for Freedom Awards
The Canada Post Corporation Flight for Freedom Awards recognize the important contributions to the cause of literacy by organizations, businesses, educators and individuals.

Provincial

Superior Propane Learners Award
As part of its support for Literacy, Superior Propane offers a $250.00 Learners Award in each province and territory of Canada. The award is presented to an outstanding adult basic education learner as part of the activities associated with the PGI annual Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournaments for Literacy.

Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Literacy

New Brunswick Premier's Youth Initiative Awards
The Premier's Youth Initiative Awards, started by the Youth Council of New Brunswick, were created to honour those who work with and on behalf of youth.

The New Brunswick Minister of State for Literacy's Annual Alpha Awards

In 1994, the Saskatchewan Adult Basic Education Association Inc. (SABEA) executive initiated an opportunity to acknowledge excellence in the field of adult basic education by establishing the SABEA Award of Excellence.
